Welcome back to Part 6 of our series! We are here to help your teen unlock their full potential and soar through their GCSE exams. While the formula sheet is a fantastic resource, many students fail to use it effectively, leaving easy marks on the table.
At Brashan Chemistry, we want to empower your child to turn that sheet into a secret weapon. Here are the 7 most common mistakes and our expert tips to fix them! 🚀
1. Treating the Sheet Like a Stranger
Many students only look at the formula sheet for the first time during the exam. This wastes precious seconds and creates panic.
- The Fix: Incorporate the sheet into every revision session. Familiarity breeds confidence!
2. The Radius vs. Diameter Trap
It sounds simple, but under pressure, students often swap the radius for the diameter.
- The Fix: Teach your child to circle the requirement in the question immediately. Elevate their accuracy by double-checking this every single time.
3. Calculator Chaos
Typing -2² without brackets gives -4, but the answer is 4. Small calculator errors lead to massive mark losses.
- The Fix: Always use brackets around negative numbers.

4. Premature Rounding
Rounding numbers halfway through a calculation creates a "snowball effect" of errors.
- The Fix: Keep the full number in the calculator and only round the very final answer to excel in precision.
5. The "Unit" Ghost
A perfect calculation without "cm²" or "J" is an incomplete answer.
- The Fix: Unleash full marks by making it a habit to write the unit as soon as the final number is calculated.
6. Using the Wrong Formula
Just because a formula is on the sheet doesn’t mean it fits the question.
- The Fix: Focus on the context. We help students understand the "why" behind the math, not just the "how."
7. Skipping the Working
If the final answer is wrong and there is no working, they get zero marks.
- The Fix: Write out the formula, show the substitution, and then the answer. This ensures they snag method marks regardless of the final result!
