Have you ever walked out of a Chemistry exam feeling like you nailed it, only to open your results and see a grade that doesn't match your effort? It’s a common frustration for many Year 12 and 13 students. Often, the gap isn't a lack of knowledge: it's a lack of understanding of how the examiner thinks.
At Brashan Chemistry, we’ve seen thousands of students struggle with this. Our founder, Dr. Erada, has helped over 15,000 students bridge this gap using her 30+ years of expertise. Today, we’re kicking off a series to help you unleash your full potential by decoding the secret language of A-Level Chemistry mark schemes.
The "Right + Wrong = Wrong" Trap
The first thing you must understand is that examiners are looking for precision. One of the most common ways students lose marks is by being "too helpful."
In many mark schemes, especially for short-answer questions, examiners follow a rule called "Right + Wrong = Wrong."
If a question asks for one reason and you provide a list of three (one correct and two incorrect), the incorrect answers can actually cancel out your mark! The examiner assumes you are "hedging your bets" rather than demonstrating specific knowledge.
Why Conciseness is Your Superpower
To elevate your performance to new heights, you need to stop writing essays for 1-mark questions.
- Be direct: If the mark scheme looks for a specific keyword, give it to them clearly.
- Avoid contradictions: Adding extra "fluff" increases the chance of you saying something that contradicts your correct point. A contradiction is an automatic mark-killer.
Join Our Journey to A* Success
Understanding the examiner’s mindset is the first step toward excelling in A-Level Chemistry. When you learn to think like the person marking your paper, you empower yourself to secure every single mark you deserve.
In the next part of this series, we’ll dive into the "Command Words" that tell you exactly what the examiner wants to see.
