Part 1: Out with the Old, In with the New
If you’ve been dreading the "Great Personal Statement Wall of Text," I have some fantastic news for you. For 2026 entry, UCAS has officially ditched the 4,000-character blank canvas in favour of something much more structured. Say goodbye to that blinking cursor and hello to the 3-Question Format. 🚀
At Brashan Chemistry, we’ve seen it all. Over my 30+ years in the classroom, I’ve helped more than 15,000 students unlock their potential and soar into their first-choice universities. Whether you are aiming for Medical School or a high-stakes Engineering degree, this change is actually your new best friend. It’s designed to level the playing field and stop the "who can write the prettiest essay" contest.
The new format breaks your statement into three distinct sections. This means no more worrying about how to transition from your love of baking to your passion for Molecular Biology. We can now focus purely on what makes you a powerhouse candidate.
Why the change? UCAS wants to see your academic grit and your genuine fit for the course without the fluff. For parents of GCSE and A-Level students, this is the time to elevate your child’s preparation. We’re moving away from "creative writing" and toward "evidence-based brilliance."
Ready to unleash your full potential? Before we dive into the specific questions, remember that the best statements are built on a foundation of top-tier grades. If you want to excel this summer, our Summer Booster programmes are now open for booking!

Don’t forget: Book your Summer Booster before June and bag a 10% early-bird discount!

Part 2: Diving into Question 1 (Passion) and Question 2 (Academic Grit)
Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. The first two questions of the new UCAS statement are the "meat and potatoes" of your application, especially for STEM and Medical School hopefuls.
Question 1: Why do you want to study this course or subject?
This is where you empower your voice. Admissions tutors don't just want to hear that you "like" Chemistry; they want to know what sparked the fire. Was it a specific experiment? A documentary on neuroplasticity? A conversation about the future of green energy? Be specific. Instead of saying you're interested in medicine, talk about the specific biological mechanism that fascinates you.
Question 2: How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare?
This is your chance to excel by showcasing your academic muscles. At Brashan Chemistry, we teach our students that A-Levels aren't just about passing tests; they are about building a toolkit. Discuss how your current subjects: like Chemistry, Biology, or Maths: connect to your future degree. Mention specific projects, research, or even that tricky lab report that taught you the importance of analytical precision.

We’ve seen thousands of students watch their achievements soar by making these connections early. When you can articulate how your A-Level studies have prepared you for the rigours of university, you become an irresistible candidate.
If you’re worried your current grades don't reflect your true potential, let's change that narrative. Our A-Level standard programs are designed to bridge that gap and ensure your "Academic Grit" section is backed up by stellar predicted grades.
PRO TIP: Use energetic action verbs! You didn't just "learn" a topic; you "mastered," "analysed," or "investigated" it.

Part 3: Mastering Question 3 and Balancing Character Limits
We’ve covered the "Why" and the "How." Now, let’s talk about the "What Else."
Question 3: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
For my future doctors and scientists, this is where you talk about your work experience, volunteering, or even that intense Duke of Edinburgh trek. But here is the secret sauce: Don’t just list what you did. Tell them what you learned. Did volunteering at a care home teach you the resilience needed for a medical career? Did a coding club improve your logical problem-solving? This is where you unleash your personality and show you’re a well-rounded human being, not just a grade-producing machine.
The Strategy: Managing the 4,000 Characters
Even though there are three questions, the overall limit is still 4,000 characters. You must have a minimum of 350 characters per question, but you get to decide how to distribute the rest.
If your extracurriculars are "God-tier" (like a prestigious internship), you might give Question 3 more weight. If your academic research is your strongest suit, let Question 2 shine. At Brashan Chemistry, we help students navigate these tactical decisions so their application feels balanced and powerful.

Managing this transition can feel overwhelming, but remember: you aren't doing this alone. We are building a community of high-achievers who journey together toward success. Whether you’re tackling GCSEs or A-Levels, the right support makes all the difference.
